D&AD DIY KYOTO'S Student Prize Winners revealed!

What fantastic talent we have here! We were very proud handing out the yellow pencil to such great talents. Congratulations to Adam, Rich & Matthew for their ingenious toaster idea. 

 

And also Congratulations to the runner up's! Second prize for Sivaprakash Shanmugam, Maximo Riadigos, Katrin Baumgarten and Ting-Chung Cheng. 

The brief we set was:
Design a product that empowers consumers who enjoy access to the luxury market to live more sustainably.

Creative Challenge:
You must design a product that by its very existence helps the consumer to live more sustainably, whether by directly affecting the consumer’s behaviour or by indirectly influencing the way they live. To do this you will need to either identify a new need in the luxury consumer market which can be filled sustainably or take an existing paradigm of a product or service and re-design it to be more sustainable in it’s material use or impact on people’s lives.

What an exciting week this was! D&AD truly pulled out all the stops...So many events to go to, nothing more a student/graduate could wish for. We would definitely like to thank D&AD for their great work and fantastic support for our events. 

We gave a workshop and a talk at Wieden&Kennedy. Wieden&Kennedy are the forerunners of helping recent graduates establish themselves in the industry. They are a fanstatic creative bunch, do amazing work . We love Wieden & Kennedy. Thank you for having DIY KYOTO at your Headquarters!

Last night we had the pleasure of receiving an award for Good Director in the Innovation&Design section.

The three founders of design consultancy DIY Kyoto have created wattson, a stylish addition to the less than glamorous world of energy monitors. Looking like an iPod docking station, wattson is aimed squarely at eco-conscious, design-loving home owners, and uses both numbers and colours to show you exactly how much energy your home is using at any given moment—with a blue glow indicating low energy usage and a red glow warning high. If that’s not enough to make you turn off unused lights and stop overfilling the kettle, there’s also an LED digital display that tells you how much you’ll pay a year based on what you’re using at that moment. So as well as looking good, DIY Kyoto claims that Wattson can reduce the electricity usage of an average household by up to 20 per cent. With energy prices likely to continue on an upward trend, this device should save you money and ease your conscience. Thrilled to receive the honour, co-founder Greta Corke says: “We are excited that the power of design is being recognised for changing behaviour. We wanted to use design to do something positive. We want to make a difference to behaviour and create a global impact.”
